Southwest Michigan Fall Friendship Force Journey

From Left to Right -
Joanne, Richard, Ginny, Michelle & Marcie
Southwest Michigan was a quick plane trip away on Allegiant Airlines from Punta Gorda.  Off we went on a hot day in September to visit the Michigan Friendship Force (FF) Club who had traveled here about 2 years ago.  A few of us decided on a pre-trip courtesy of Marcie Ellis.  After landing in Grand Rapids we picked up a small van and headed for our first stop, Charlevioux.
Ginny, Marcie, & Michelle at B&B
We checked into a neat B&B and headed downtown, where we found a cute little restaurant with Michigan Whitefish on the menu.  We marveled at the fall leaves that were appearing in some of the trees.  It's been a long time since we felt chilly and our jeans and sweaters kept us warm.
Fall Leaves!  Hurrah!

Next morning we indulged in lemon blueberry pancakes and then went exploring.  Mushroom houses dotted the town built by Earl Young that looked straight out of a Hobbit House book or movie!  We met a nice lady hiker who directed us properly and even told us about salmon coming through the lake.  Just a lovely morning!

Mushroom House
Biking around Mackinac - awesome!
All checked out and along the way we stopped for late lunch/early dinner at Legg's, quite a different sort of restaurant complete with wood beams and interesting stuff everywhere.  Polish food was on the menu and we all indulged!  We checked out the back garden with lovely landscaping and views. We also stopped at Petosky, a cute place on the lake to hunt the ancient spotted rocks.  Lots of fun! More driving and before we knew it, we were at the Shepler's ferry stop to Mackinac Island.  No cars are allowed so we parked and boarded and walked off into our next hotel, the lovely Bicycle Inn, just steps from the ferry.  It was cool and raining slightly, but that didn't dampen our spirits.  We met for wine & cheese in the hotel lobby and marveled at the lovely horse drawn carriages and beauty around us.
In front of Grand Hotel

Next morning after a nice hotel breakfast, it was bicycle riding time!  We rented great bikes and headed off for an 8-1/2 mile circumnavigation of the island.  It was cool with rain threatening, but all was well.  We had a great ride, stopping to admire the views, signs and historical markers and Lake Huron (with fresh water and no sharks!) along the pathway.  Next was lunch at the Grand Hotel, quite a gourmet experience!  We self-toured the hotel, checked out the blue starry decorated drink bar on the top floor, and then enjoyed a LARGE lunch.  Tables went on and on full of breads, salads, appetizers, veggies, and main dishes.  Everyone ate until they were full - and then some.  Oh, let's not forget the dessert tables.  Yum!  We staggered out in time to catch a lovely horse & buggy ride in the rain.  We all agreed Mackinac is a wonderful destination and many wanted to come back and spend more time there in the future.

We caught the late ferry and headed for Traverse City.  Here, our hotel was on the shore of Lake Michigan.  Next morning we headed for the start of our Michigan FF Experience.

Us with Stan and Pam, wonderful hosts!
Our hosts were Pam & Stan Sackett, a lovely couple with a very nice home in Kalamazoo.  We had the entire bottom floor of their home with extremely comfortable accommodations, complete with a Tempur-Pedic mattress.  We slept like a dream - and they fed us lovely breakfasts - we loved Pam's banana & blueberry pancakes!

The club had a week's worth of activities planned for us.  It began with a Welcome Brunch at Walden Woods followed by afternoon at the Air Zoo.  This place is a magnificent plane & space museum.  The highlight was recognition of one of our members, Kev Janiak, for his contribution of a superb plane.  We also enjoyed the simulations of flying a plane.  Lots of fun!
Our member, Kev, donated his home-made plane to Air Zoo in Kalamazoo!

Thursday was the Meyer May House, an authentic "Frank Lloyd Wright" home with an excellent tour.  Later that day we traveled to Meijer Gardens for lunch and a very enjoyable time strolling through the sculpture gardens and admiring the landscaping.
Magnificent Horse Sculpture in Meijer Gardens with our whole group - Stan is holding up a hoof!

Friday was Amish Day.  We had a magnificent lunch by Martha and her family in her Amish homestead.  We also toured the Menno-Hof Museum which gave us information on the history and beliefs of this culture.  On the way home, we stopped at a member (Sheila)'s home to check out a homemade trimaran, antique cars and a huge train set in the basement.

Joanne & Sue at Dunes
Saturday was our "free" day and we spent it in Kalamazoo checking out the Halloween activities, library and sights.  Sunday we visited the Fenn Valley Winery for some lunch and wine tasting.  The highlight was a Dune Buggy Ride on the Michigan sand dunes.  Lots of fun!

Monday was our Farewell Brunch at the Kellogg Manor followed by a tour.  Next day was another "free" day spent in Grand Rapids touring the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum and enjoying an afternoon stroll to the Fish Ladder, a lovely park.

Sunset over beautiful Lake Michigan
Friendship Force has certainly opened up not only the International sites to us, but also sites in our own country.  There is no better way to travel and learn about the area you are visiting and the people who live there than to go with Friendship Force!

Visiting the Dali Museum in St. Pete

It's summer and hot in Punta Gorda; therefore,  it was a great time to visit the fabulous Dali Museum in St Pete.
Can you see Lincoln?

Saturday proved to be a great day to visit.  The roads were practically empty as we whisked up I 75 in record time.  We got there just in time for the docent tour which was extremely well done and informative.  What makes this museum so special besides Dali's genius works of art are the new "augmented reality" experiences which allow you to actually be part of the art work!  Really cool.  You've got to see it!

After a lovely lunch in the museum's cafe, we continued on to Goya Exhibit and to see some of the other things we missed.  Truly a lovely time.  Check out our garden pictures.

Summer Reads and Movies

Punta Gorda has been rainy this summer with constant little storms, even in the morning.  This is a different weather pattern that is normally seen.  Usually, we have afternoon thunderstorms.

As a result, we've been doing lots of reading.  I really enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing by Odelia Owens and The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See.  I got both from our local library.  Can't wait to see the new library.  It looks beautiful from the outside and is located next door to our History Park.  It should be ready for move in by next week!

Also saw a super documentary at Burns Cinema in Sarasota called Maiden.  It's an inspiring movies about the first all female crew to sail a race around the world.  We enjoyed Racing in the Rain, a sweet golden retriever story!

Barbara

Barbara Feser, my sister of the heart

Good evening, my name is Joanne Collins, and I am Barbara’s friend of 30 years. A long time ago she called me her sister – her sister “of the heart” along with her other cherished friend and sister, Lynn McFadden. You see, Barb was raised an only child – and she wanted sisters in her life – and we were lucky she chose us!

Well, one fine day in 1990 my phone rang.  It was Barbara- from New Directions, a wonderful singles group for mostly “Middle Aged” divorced Catholics sponsored by St Paul’s Church in nearby Nassau Bay.  Barb knew I had just joined and she invited me to a get-together at her home.

I was raw from my divorce and I gratefully accepted her invite.  That’s how our friendship began – with kind-hearted, sweet Barb reaching out to me.   Suddenly, it was okay not to pretend to be strong.  I could talk about my feelings with her, cry and she would listen with compassion, understanding and love.  I had a best friend, a “sister,” and together, we’d figure out this strange new single life.

What was of importance to Barbara?

First and foremost, like most mothers, her two children, Jerry and Susan and her treasured granddaughter, KATIE. She was so proud of the responsible adults they became. She loved her husband John’s family, too. She had a particularly close relationship with Amy and was joyful grandma to her two children, Lindsey and Devin.

Her dogs were so special to her - and gave her continuous smiles and were a comfort to her after husband, John passed. There was Einstein (the smart one), Bitsie & Benji and recently Molly and Moxie.

Barb was very grateful for the care that her daughter gave her during these last 3 years of her illness.  Susie put her life “on hold” to care for her Mom, thus enabling Barb to stay in the comfort of her home.  What a gift Susie gave her Mom!

Barb and I often talked about her career teaching math in high school.  She absolutely loved GEOMETRY.  Teaching wasn’t always easy, especially dealing with the paperwork requirements.  But, through it all, she cared deeply about her students and treasured her teacher friends.

And then, there was Holiday Time

No one loved Christmas as much as BARB.  Did any of you see her bookcase of lighted villages?  Wow – and there was the 9 ft Christmas Tree in her first League City home.

One time, I arrived early to help with a party and noticed that one of the Christmas candles in the hallway had suddenly fallen over and set fire to a table covering.  We quickly extinguished the fire with a towel and we shook as we finished getting the flames and smoke out – just before a crowd arrived!

Barb introduced me to POLISH Christmas Eve.  The table was set with 13 different dishes (for 12 apostles and Christ).  The youngest child went outside to see the first Christmas star in the sky.  We even had communion from wafers that she obtained from her childhood church in Pennsylvania.

Easter, too, was a big event!   Many of you will remember her famous Adult Easter Egg hunts where we stuffed plastic eggs and hid them in the her back yard.  We definitely got into “our inner child” and everyone had a ball!

And, there were her special cars -  she named them – and I think her Ford convertible, PRECIOUS, was her favorite one of all!

And then there was her love of John

We both wanted to remarry and have a family life.  So, we went to dances and single events trying to meet Mr. Right.  I remember the evening when she first met John. She was so excited!  We went through the ups and downs of her relationship with him, and with my relationships, too.  I’ll never forget John and Barb dancing – It was a joy to behold as they swung around the dance floor.

And then BARB losing her beloved John

One Christmas John was coughing and received a terrible diagnosis – lung cancer.  Barb supported him during all his treatments and never left his side.  I wondered how she would bear his death.  She told me that it was OK because she knew he loved her.
Later, she had the resources to sell her home in League City and move on to an “Over 55” community where she made many friends and especially enjoyed playing bridge.  Her dogs, she called them her babies, kept her company.

Lastly, BARB fighting medical challenges

I’ll never forget when she told me she had a brain tumor!  The news came during one of the happiest times of her life, during her engagement to John.  Everyone in our couples’ support group, New Life, rallied around her.  The night before surgery we held hands and sang, Be Not Afraid, a beautiful song to give her strength.  We rejoiced that the tumor was benign!  This health set- back didn’t stop her wedding plans!  She obtained a fashionable wig and she looked radiant as she walked down the aisle at Rice University Chapel in her full-length white wedding dress.  What a beautiful time we all had!

During the past few years, she has fought her cancer diagnosis bravely taking multiple treatments at MD Anderson.

Today, we lost a great woman. But our Faith tells us she lives on.  She is lifted up ON EAGLES WINGS.  We thank God for Barb, her loving spirit and all that she accomplished and taught us.  We know she is happy in heaven and wants you to be happy, here on Earth, until you reunite when your time comes.  We will forever be blessed to have known her.

We will miss you, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Teacher, Friend, our dear Barbara!

Visiting Kennedy Space Center

After watching the 50th Anniversary Coverage of Man Walking on the Moon, we decided it was high time for us to visit the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).  It's just about a 3-1/2 hr easy drive across the state - so we hopped in our car and went!

Inn at Cocoa Beach - very nice!
Plume of smoke of rocket to space station

The Inn at Cocoa Beach was great.  We arrived in time for free wine & cheese.  As we talked to Canadians from Montreal, we discovered that a resupply rocket to the Space Station had been rescheduled.  It was due to launch at 6:01 p.m.

We walked a short distance to the beautiful beach and waited patiently.  Exactly to the minute, we heard a rumble and saw the rocket lift off with its plume of fire underneath.  We watched it disappear into the beautiful blue sky and all that was left was a beautiful plume of smoke.  About a half hour later, when the booster came back down, we heard a tremendous sonic boom that shook us and the surroundings.  Wow!  That was exciting!

We went for a swim in the gorgeous Atlantic - waves were gentle and water was warm.  Next morning, we hopped into the car for an early admission to KSC.  We spent the whole day there and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.  It has been completely revamped since I visited there about 45 years ago!  Of course, what was I thinking?

Launch Pad
We agreed we loved seeing the launch pads and talking to all the international visitors (we met people from Toulouse, France; Germany; and Canada).  We like the Saturn 5 exhibit, the talk with the astronaut, the simulation of going up in space (very cool), the Space Station exhibit, the 3D IMAX, and more.  That evening we had one of the best seafood dinners we've had in a long time at Florida Seafood Grill.

Outside close-up
Next day was time to depart.  We took a chance and went for a ride out to Satellite Beach, retirement home of John & Opal Forsythe.   I worked with John for many years at the University of Texas at Galveston in our cephalopod lab.  Luckily (or by fate?), there he was building a kitchen onto the church he founded where he is now pastor - Calvary Christian Church Surfside.  We had a great visit!  Time to travel on home full of good memories...

Independence Day 2019

We had a wonderful 4th of July Celebration with our boating club, the PGIslanders at Laishley Marina.  There was food galore and I even made an American pie!  We had patriotic music and a great video of famous Americans.  Check out pictures below!

Goodbye Indigo Star, one great boat!

Three years ago we purchased a beautiful trawler and named her Indigo Star.  After many years sailing we decided to try power boating, slow version (top speed cruising was ~9.5 knots). We had a great time on her.  Highlights were:

Enjoying pizza with Mary & Bill and John & Marilyn in Stuart

  • Our cruise across Lake Okeechobee to Stuart, where we met friends, Marilyn & John on m/v Blue Goose, Mary & Bill on s/v Impulse, and Jackie & Bob on s/v Sabrena.  On this trip we visited 13 different yacht clubs in the Florida Council thus earning us a 2017 Founder's Award presented to us at the Moorings Yacht Club in Vero Beach.
  • Our cruise north with the PGIslanders, especially last fall when we visited Tampa Yacht Club and Ebor City, FL.  An added bonus was catching up with my old boss, Roger, who was at a scientific meeting in St. Pete.
  • Participation in the Isles Yacht Club Blessing of the Fleet and at Christmas time, the Lighting of the Fleet.
  • Leading a cruise to Useppa Island and making pancakes on her
  • On Richard's Birthday, last New Year's Eve, being the Host Boat and welcoming the PGIslander's as we counted down Punta Gorda Midnite New Year's Eve and had a great Breakfast Buffet on New Year's Day.
Bleu Kitty loved being on the boat!  He is a great boat cat!
We decided to sell our boat because maintenance for Richard was becoming more difficult and the cost of insurance, fuel and ownership was cutting into our retirement income.  Plus, we decided we want to travel a bit more on Viking and land tours.

Three months ago, we listed the trawler on BoatTrader.com and quickly we had interest.  On Monday, July 8, we closed on a deal with the new owners, Jeff & Debbie of the Savannah, GA area.  We wish them fun, safe times on Indigo Star and hope they will enjoy her as much as we have.

What's next boating wise?

We don't know.  We are taking a break from boat ownership for a while, and then, maybe we will look for a smaller boat.  It's hard not to be on the water!
