March 16 -
We booked all day private tour of Bali waterfalls with Hire Bali Driver. The hike down to Tukad Cepung required negotiating a number of flights of steps, some steep with handrails, some with uneven huge steps, some without handrails. We were careful using our hiking sticks to prevent falls.
I had tested myself by quickly stepping up the Punta Gorda Parking Garage stairs and back down. I didn't require anything but normal breathing. I had no trouble with knees or hips so I thought the hike to the waterfall and back would not be a problem. It wasn't. But Joanne did not test herself before we left. She had a hard time getting back up suffering very sore quads, muscular back pain and sore right knee and hip.
I made a big mistake thinking my camera could photograph the falls handheld in the dim light. Not a chance. So my pictures are more or less worthless. Our guide did get one. Besides the low light level, water dripping down rocks overhead added water drops to the lens. Had I brought a small tripod and a lens hood I might have usable photos. Live and Learn. The waterfall was a spiritual experience - so lovely with the light streaming through.
Smaller Waterfall Down Stream
Reaching the Tibumana Waterfall required far fewer steps to go down and then back up.. The path to the waterfall crossed over the stream on picturesque bamboo foot bridges.
One can swim at this waterfall although the pool is not very deep. Richard elected to get wet!
We continued on to lunch, then a tour of a coffee plantation where we sampled Kopi Luwak coffee also known as "Capa POO chino." made from the coffee beans in the poo of an animal locally known as Kopi Luwak who live in the woods and consume only the best coffee beans. They are not digested by the animal and the sterilized beans are a delicacy that makes the best coffee, world renown! Later we took a Jungle Swing and visited picturesque Rice Terraces.
